Common questions — Vesterålen
Quick answers from people who live here.
Are Vesterålen and Lofoten the same?
No. Vesterålen sits north of Lofoten, separated by Raftsund. Vesterålen has gentler hills, more farmland, and is much quieter than Lofoten. Andøya island in Vesterålen is Norway's top sperm-whale watching spot.
When can I see whales in Vesterålen?
Sperm whales feed in the Bleik Canyon off Andøya all summer (June–early September). Operators in Stø and Andenes guarantee 95% sighting. Killer whales and humpbacks are further north (Skjervøy, winter only).
How many days for Vesterålen?
Two to three nights with Andøya as the highlight. Combine with Lofoten as a 7-night trip via Andenes–Gryllefjord ferry to Senja or the Raftsund road south. Vesterålen alone justifies 3 nights only if whale-watching is the priority.
